Dates: 8 - 14 April 2007

Duration: 1 week

Data collected: I attempted to document everything I consumed for a week. I did not define exactly which elements of the word ‘consumption’ that meant. As a result I ended up documenting everything I could think of including: what I ate, what I drank, cosmetics I used, cleaning products, toilet / kitchen paper, things I bought, stamps, printing paper / office supplies, electricity, water, gas, petrol for transportation etc. I documented these things both photographically (where possible) and by making notes which were transferred into an Excel spreadsheet.

Objectives: This was the first project I had been commissioned to complete and therefore I did not set the objectives. A US magazine called Print decided to commission 4 artists to document their ‘consumption’ over the course of a week. This could be read in any way we liked.

Outcomes: The outcome for this project was always defined by the magazine as a ‘two-page spread’. In the end I just used the images that I had collected and arranged them on the pages in chronological order. This did not document the less tangible areas of consumption such as electricity or water usage, so this data remained in the spreadsheet and did not get used.
